If you had told me years ago that I’d be a fully qualified financial adviser, I probably would’ve laughed. Not because I didn’t believe in the profession, but because I didn’t fully understand what it was. Like many young professionals, I thought financial advice was just about spreadsheets, stocks, and super. But now, standing here fully qualified, I can tell you: it’s so much more than that.
What drew me in wasn’t just the numbers; it was the people. I’ve always been fascinated by how money shapes our lives, choices, and futures. But what I didn’t expect was how deeply personal this job would be. Every client I’ve worked with during my professional year and now has reminded me that behind every financial goal is a story: a couple saving for their first home, a single mum planning for her kids’ education, a retiree wanting to leave a legacy. Being part of those stories is incredibly rewarding.
And the timing? Honestly, it couldn’t be better. The demand for financial advisers in Australia is growing fast, but the number of qualified professionals is shrinking. That means there’s real opportunity for people like us—young, motivated, and ready to bring a fresh perspective to the industry. I’ve seen firsthand how much clients value clear, ethical, and relatable advice. They don’t want jargon; they want someone who listens, understands, and helps them make confident decisions.
One of the things I’ve loved most about this journey is the flexibility. I’ve met advisers who work remotely, run their own businesses, or specialise in areas they’re passionate about—like ethical investing or helping women build wealth. It’s a career that can grow with you, adapt to your lifestyle, and give you the freedom to shape your own path.
If you’re thinking about becoming a financial adviser, here’s what the path looks like: you’ll need the appropriate degree, and then complete a professional year, 1,600 hours of supervised work, including structured training. As part of that, you’ll sit the ASIC Financial Adviser Exam, which covers ethics, law, and advice strategies. It’s challenging, but with the right support, totally doable. And once you’re qualified, you’ll keep learning through ongoing professional development.
Looking back, I’m so glad I took the leap. This career has given me purpose, growth, and a real sense of contribution. If you’re someone who loves finance but also cares deeply about people, this might just be the perfect fit for you too.
