The Advice Academy is proud to offer a mentoring service through The Art of Mentoring to help mentees grow, develop skills and navigate challenges they face during the supervision or completion of their Professional Year. Mentoring spaces are limited and available to both PY candidates and PY supervisors. Although there is no requirement to engage an external mentor, the Advice Academy sees it as beneficial as a good external mentor can:
Accelerate your development
Provide exposure to a different way of thinking
Build your network
Give the perspective of someone external to your business
Hold you to account
Assist you with feedback and encouragement
How does it work?
Mentoring through the Advice Academy is on demand, which means it runs as often (or as infrequently) as the mentee and mentor want. You may choose to meet virtually or face-to-face and It is recommended you set up an external mentoring relationship at the start of your PY and if possible, continue it for six-nine months. The mentoring fee covers a maximum term of 12 months on the platform.
Payment is made to the FAAA who will provide you with a link to set yourself up on the external mentoring platform. Both mentors and mentees answer a handful of questions and mentees are then shown a list of compatible mentors based on their profile and may make a match request. If the mentor accepts the match, they are paired without the administrator having to connect them. Alternatively, the mentee may request the administrator to match them. Mentors can pause their availability at any time.
Each mentee can only have one mentor at a time and it’s recommended that mentors do not offer their services to more than two mentees at a time.

How much does it cost?
A small one-off fee is required by the mentee in order to cover the operational and administrative costs of The Art of Mentoring platform. The time commitment between mentee and mentor is agreed upon being matched.

Give Back: Become a Mentor
The Advice Academy is always looking for quality and passionate mentors who want to give back to the next generation of advisers (or support an existing PY Supervisor).
Who can be a mentor?
If mentoring a PY candidate it is beneficial to have been an adviser yourself. Mentor a PY supervisor we recommend having 10+ years experience in financial services.
The Advice Academy aims to provide mentees with a diverse range of mentors to choose from. Preference is given to current FAAA members and those who hold the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® designation.
Why volunteer as a mentor?
There is no cost involved in being a mentor.
Being a mentor can be incredibly rewarding and beneficial – here are a few benefits:
- Give back – mentoring gives you the opportunity to make a significant positive impact on someone else’s journey to becoming a future adviser.
- New connections – mentoring can expand your professional network, connecting you with people you wouldn’t necessarily come across in your day-to-day role.
- Personal growth – mentoring allows you to reflect on your own experiences, learn from them and share them with others which can lead to personal growth and self-discovery. Often the mentor learns just as much from the mentee!
